Iceland: The Blue Lagoon

Prior to visiting The Blue Lagoon, I read a post on my favourite Icelandic blog ‘I Heart Reykjavik’ entitled ‘The Blue Lagoon: A tourist trap or an important part of your Iceland checklist?

Having now visited The Blue Lagoon, I totally agree with Auður’s opinion: “Do you like Spas? Do you like soaking in warm water outside ? Do you like visiting places you won’t find anywhere else? Do the pictures interest you and make you think you’d like it there? Then yes, you should definitely visit… It’s a unique experience and if you don’t mind paying for that experience it’s all worth it in the end. You decide what is worth it to you.”

Yeah, sure, there’s other lagoons and outdoor pools in Iceland that aren’t as busy, aren’t as touristy and aren’t as expensive – but the bottom line is, The Blue Lagoon is an absolutely magical experience.

Blue Lagoon

We had a bit of money left over after our honeymoon (thank you generous friends and family!) so Rachel and I treated ourselves to the Luxury package, which included a private changing room, entrance to a luxury lounge (with complimentary fruit and coffee etc) and numerous other benefits. It wasn’t cheap, but it was one of the most relaxing and luxurious experiences of my life!

It was snowing whilst we were there, which made the whole experience even more etherial. There’s something almost other-wordly about being outside, in warm water, with snow flakes landing on you!

There’s a bar (all packages except Standard include a free drink), so you can enjoy a nice cold pint whilst in the water. There’s also plenty of places to help yourself to the complimentary white silica face mask for that archetypal Blue Lagoon photo!

The Luxury entrance package also includes a reservation at Lava Restaurant and a glass of fizz each. The food was great, the service was good and the views were absolutely impeccable. We’ll be back.

Next time we go to Iceland, we’ll definitely be checking out some of the other lagoons and outdoor pools, but that doesn’t mean we won’t treat ourselves to another trip to the Blue Lagoon. For more information, visit:
